Dr. Vath (James) is a Venture Partner at Cure Ventures. James brings more than a 30 year history of success launching and running new programs in biotechnology and holds 26 patents. James has proven leadership abilities within a wide range of start-up organizations as an accomplished drug hunter with 6 FDA approved drugs. While applying his strong scientific knowledge across a broad array of technology platforms and disease areas, James has routinely been able to solve seemingly intractable scientific and experimental challenges.

Prior to joining Cure Ventures, James was Managing Partner for Pharmup Solutions, LLC a consultant serving early-stage biotechnology startups and during this time also serving as CEO of Response Therapeutics, Inc..

From 2006 to 2019 James co-founded and served in various roles at Zafgen, Inc. James managed Zafgen from clinical proof-of-concept through its initial public offering and identified and licensed the asset which became the company’s lead clinical program and crafting Zafgen’s IP portfolio of over 75 patents.

From 1999 to 2006 James was involved in several early stage and mature companies and as consultant, employee, or founder. While at Praecis Pharmaceuticals, he served as Head of Research. At Millennium Pharmaceuticals, a pioneer in genomics, James founded the first proteomics platform in the pharmaceutical industry. From 1989 to 1996, James was at Genetics Institute as a Lab Head where he pioneered the application of mass spectrometry for characterizing protein structure-function. In this role he took multiple projects from a candidate stage into development and provided critical information for the market approval of five different therapeutic protein drugs.

James academic background includes a Ph.D. in Chemistry from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology where he studied under Prof. Klaus Biemann, and a B.S. in Chemistry from Northeastern University where he graduated with highest honors.
